the iain report

tonight i had iain round my house for some reason. this reason being that we chatted on msn for a bit before we both agreed that we were actually bored enough to drive to asda (my place of work) and bumble about there for a while. this has happened more than once, and i am now coming to understand that iain and i do very little that is in the way of interesting. though tonight, we did purchase macdonald’s chicken sandwiches from the drive-thru, which were fairly tasty.

conversation tonight spanned a range of topics, from what songs iain and i could successfully pull off playing together. iain’s choices were either by brmc, nine black alps or the vines. a short list you may think, but when compared to my list of; muse, iain looks a veritable john peel by distinction. we actually played a few good numbers, interpol among them, obstacle 1 namely, and you only live once by the strokes came out really nicely, it is a nice song after all. this little jam session was spurred, at its core, by iain’s need to form a band and play a gig. for doing gigs makes people like you.

there has been more than one occaision where i have taken a drive with iain. by ‘taken a drive’ i mean, got in a car with this man and travelled to some strange place like bacup, or todmorden, or hebden bridge. in fact, those are the only places we’ve been to, we always seem to end up there. bacup was the start of it.

some time last year, in 2006, iain came to pick me up for some reason, it may have been new years eve in fact, and we wondered where we could drive to that might be a fun place. i suggested we travel north, to lands where the trees and indigenous humans thicken, and where names become more feral, more primal.last night, iain and i drove again. first to asda to pick up some snax; i bought chocolate hobnobs and asda value fruit pastilles and midget gems, iain got himself a dip dab.

after our short stop at my local asda retail outlet, we proceeded along the motorway to rawtenstall. then to haslingden. then, somehow, to west yorkshire. we drove through todmorden and hebden bridge, before returning to lancashire, by way of tiny bacup.

conversation on this trip was quite varied. iain and i talked our way through how hilarious people of the west country are, the ethics of sperm donation (which we have covered before, but i felt needed a revisit), iain’s homoerotic experiences with his future housemates…we also talked about iain’s complete and total lack of any principles, moral codes, values, or deeply-held beliefs. we reached this conclusion by way of my assertion that i could break him down. however, i apparently could not, since he has nothing for me to break down. i could not identify one thing which i could challenge about iain. how interesting is that.

Iain told me he wants to “be in a rock band and a dance band”.

I replied..

03:01:36 me: rock is shit
03:01:46 iain: no it isn’t
03:01:50 me: ’tis
03:02:18 iain: no, there’s no way you can say it’s shit
03:02:33 me: it’s mega shit
03:03:21 iain: whatever
